HOW TO MAKE A STATEMENT WITH TILES

Tiles are trending in home design. To help you stay in the know, Evening Standard's Kai Price and Amanda Nelson rounded up five tile trends that will stand the test of time, and spoke with some tile experts to get their low down on key tile looks for 2018. They write:

Marble Definitely not a new trend but one that is still going strong in 2018. Previously seen as too extravagant and perhaps only suited for luxury hotels, marble is now accessible to all. Decorative marble mosaics have been hitting the bathroom design scene this year, from stylish scallops and chevrons to hexagons and penny-rounds. In terms of surface finish its matt over polished. A smooth matt or ‘honed’ finish gives a more sophisticated feel and allows the material to speak for itself, say the team over at Mandarin Stone.

Play with Pattern If you want to add a creative flair to your new bathroom or perhaps an element of intrigue to your new en-suite? Then a patterned tile could be just your thing. Even boutique hotels are pulling out their old tiles to replace them with new patterned ones in the hope of people snapping the floors and sharing on social media. Our choice, opt for a monochrome palette with gold brassware for a classic yet fun look.

Modern Metro The classic metro tile certainly still has its place in the 2018 bathroom. We love it teamed with a patterned or hexagonal floor tile but this year the metro has had a thoroughly modern make-up. Sinéad Hegarty from the Ripples design team tell us it’s time to let a new modern metro tile have its moment. We’re talking slim metro tiles in an array of gorgeous shades, from pastels colours to neutrals in a texture.

Bigger isn’t always better We've seen an increase in the use of small tiles, or Mosaics, in variety of shapes on the floor. Tiles in marble or a retro porcelain style will give the illusion of texture creating an interesting surface.

Must have Herringbone The herringbone tile works great on walls but we particularly love it as flooring, offering the same allure as a classic wooden parquet. The striking design can be easily recreated in your bathroom using plain or coloured tiles. If you are are looking for a bit of wow-factor why not mix hues to achieve an even bolder look. For a contemporary look go for herringbone tilling as a backdrop inside a built in wall shelf to add a contrast to the wall tiles.
