A recent report from the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) shows homeowners are increasingly using technology in their kitchen, causing potential ripple effects impacting kitchen design. The report tallied responses from homeowners aged 25-65 planning a kitchen remodel in the next two years.

According to the report, the top three areas where consumers seek knowledge from their designers are in smart appliances, Wi-Fi connectivity, and centralized lighting controls. Over eight in ten respondents indicated a desire for smart appliances, while nearly two thirds wanted places to stand or displace mobile devices in the kitchen and charging stations. The survey found other appealing features include kitchen technology allowing consumer to control the home's temperature or security system and to create preset lighting scenes. The report found that the additional home value was the top benefit among homeowners considering adding kitchen technology.

The report found that one third of designers are already frequently recommending integrated kitchen technology solutions to clients, but most designers and consumers only know enough about technology to ask the basic questions.
